Perfect Waste of Time

PWOT is a fun but brief 4-page “monthly broadsheet” focussing on media issues and subvertising. The image on the cover of # 33 drew me in: disguised as a hip telephone company ad, it asks the reader, “What good is a home phone if you’re homeless?” Through fake advertisements and humorous articles, PWOT takes on the giants of the telecommunications industry, the ever-so-increasingly-idiotic “Year 2000 Problem”, vanity publishers, the stockmarket, Barney and Norplant. Issue #34 has a hilarious article that informs readers how to invest in the coming global recession. It gives such helpful suggestions as illegal drugs (tinpot dictators depend on the income), sunblock (increase in need due to ozone holes), security technology (the gap between rich and poor is creating a huge market) and David Bowie (he sells and sells). This zine is a great idea, and since it’s inexpensive to produce, it can be distributed free – maybe even left lying around in cafes and streetcars where ordinary people will pick it up. Heh heh heh.
