You Drive Me Ape

This is a zine devoted to primates in popular culture. It starts with a feature on Gorilla Loco, Canada’s greatest primate actor, a character who “appeared in well over a hundred films in Canada and Mexico between 1966 and 1982.” Unfortunately this is just the introduction to Loco, and we have to wait until the next issue for Case to actually do what he says he is going to do and “tell Gorilla Loco’s story from his humble beginning in the wilds of Northern Ontario to his meteoric rise as a star of stage and screen, and on to this tragic disappearance in the Mexican desert.” There’s also stuff on cartoon ape Magilla Gorilla, the band 8-track Gorilla and a lengthy piece by Steve Fentone chronicling the appearance of apes in the movies. This is a pretty cool zine and I’m hoping it comes out at least once more so we can hear more of Loco’s story. (Hal Niedzviecki)
