Western Suit

This is the second team-up between two Toronto powerhouses – writer McCormack and publisher pas de chance. Half the fun is the glorious package, which consists of almost everything you need to make your own cowpoke jersey. In fact, the book comes in a beautiful pattern package, like the kind, I imagine, you once could buy at sewing and fabric shops and small town general stores. I’m thinking there’s a retro thing going on here, but maybe you can still find sewing pattern kits like this. The next time I set off to sew myself a shirt, I’ll check it out. At any rate, the packaging is so great it almost eclipses the story, which is the beginning of a McCormack novel-in-progress. In Wester Suit, Hank Williams encounters a devious and devilish tailor that sets him on the path to fame. Fraught with homo-erotic tension and laden with period detail, this is vintage McCormack. Unlike the lavish package, it leaves you wanting more. (Hal Niedzviecki)
