Under Terra: Nullius

Wow. This was a nice surprise. Under Terra is a continuing saga involving the lives of sixteen Canadian teenagers who, while carrying out a one month sentence imposed on them by the Canadian Correctional Program, lose their ship’s mast and find themselves drifting off the coast of Greenland where they enter an opening in the cliff face. Inside the cave is a passage which leads miles below the Earth to a civilization thought to be extinct. This is the premise, and at the start of this issue, it seems the teenagers have already established themselves quite nicely into their new surroundings. However, this is hardly Journey To The Center Of The Earth; these kids are dealing with pregnancy, fitting in, depression, sex, and all other afflictions that come with being young. The story is mature and realistic and the artwork is simply breathtaking. Williams’s style is refreshing and unique, and simply saturates the eyes with a fine use of lines and shading. Several of the panels ask to be looked at again and again. (KJ)
