UGLY

For the most part, Ugly contains Rita’s personal musings on being a girl, and her forays into feminism. It s designed in classic zine style, with a butcher knife and contact cement, and all the better for it. She quotes Kathleen Hanna and Alice Walker, tells tales from the donut shop where she works, thinks about her mulatto heritage (not a popular thing in St. Thomas), talks bands, generally sounds off. A disturbing story by Anne gives us a glimpse of the enemy: Big Ed, her abusive father ( I would like to know if anyone out there has a loving father ). The story makes Rita s self-empowerment techniques (eg., masturbating to Cyndi Lauper) seem more vital, if not quite adequate.
