Trade – Queer Things

A queer mag of surprisingly broad appeal. It was difficult to discern the gay content in some articles, for instance, about Kika Thorne, described only as an anarchist-activist filmmaker. I super-wanted to find her films, even before I discovered the article was written by the editrix of Broken Pencil! Filmmaker Bob Gosse also discusses his film “Julie Johnson,” in which a lesbian turns back to being straight. Trade lets him off the hook from the obvious militant charge of anti-lesbianism. The cover even jokingly asks, “Does this man hate lesbians?” I was unsure why there were several pages of photos of backs, but I enjoyed them, and I felt a strange resonance in an article about lesbian long-distance romantic folly. Definitely the queer mag a straight guy can dig. (Flick Harrison)
