The Monsters In My Tummy

Strange how few webzines make full use of the medium’s capabilities. Not so for Roman Dirge, whose short Flash poetry story “Monsters in my Tummy” is a funny, touching story about the war of emotions waged in the aftermath of a breakup. Esteem and Ambition wage a battle against Betrayal, Sir Anger and Love in Vein. (Yes, it’s sometimes a little corny as well.) Dirge’s strength is his depiction of emotions as small beasties, presented in a unique and arresting style. It’s funny, and although the cadence in the poetry could use some work, the animation is strong enough to carry the story. The only problem is the big banner ads at the top of the page, which go a long way in ruining the atmosphere Roman Dirge has carefully created. (SA)
