The Bright Pearl

Now that I’m in my mid-twenties, I often forget that zines like this still exist. I mean, zines that thank Patti Smith, Bikini Kill and Courtney Love on the very first page. Zines that rip up women’s fashion magazines and reality television and quote Naomi Wolf in the same breath. Unironically. I read The Bright Pearl, and thought, Thank Fucking God that teenaged girls like this do indeed live and breathe and make these messy, angry, passionate zines. And although I might find myself rolling my eyes at the naiveté inherent in these cultural critiques, I am also relieved. With a few more years and few more books, this is a girl that will grow up and do something awesome. (Teri Vlassopoulos)
