Stylus

Many things have been said about the venerable Stylus over the years. Some have accused it of being a less-than-reasonable facsimile of other leading Canadian music rags. Some have charged that it is merely a boring rehash of second-rate bands and banal slapstick journalism and like-minded observations. Others have suggested that they wouldn’t even line their birdcages with its pages. I say pooh on them all! Stylus has always been about providing a platform to aspiring writers, photographers and other journalistic types. The fact that they’ve been able to maintain a high level of quality for so many years is truly a testament to the University of Winnipeg and its students. The magazine is a labour of love, and this warm niceness comes through its pages like a swift kick in groin. This issue features cool interviews with Warsawpack and Veda Hille, plus an insightful article about Prairie Music Week that gives a brutal, honest account of how a young band can break out of its hometown. Add regular features such as live reviews, CKUW primers and there you have it – The Stylus recipe for success. Don’t knock it until ya try it! (CG)
