Strike!

The Social Revolutionary Anarchist Federation had a tendency called the Anarchist Communist Tendency. It split from SRAF and created the Anarchist Community Federation. A major project of the ACF was the newspaper The North American Anarchist, which as the ACF began to dissolve was renamed STRIKE!. This is ancient history, of which I was a part. The Northeastern Federation of Anarchist-Communists has reached back into time for the name of their new magazine, one consciously in the tradition of the ACF and The North American Anarchist/Strike. It was hard not to burst out, when reading this, with something like “That’s not the way we’d do it.” It really is close enough to the work coming out of the anarchist-communist/anarcho-syndicalist world of thirty years ago to evoke a sense of common history, but does deal with some concerns in a different way, coming up in a world shaped by different social forces. There is good coverage of rank and file labour activism not found elsewhere, even in the traditional left papers. There is some overlap with other progressive papers…coverage of protests, for example…but covered with a different focus. Here the focus is on working alternatives to the dominant world and effective challenges to power, not specifically on the protests themselves. It is a good effort and I am glad that something new has come from the work of decades past. (Brian Burch)
