Streetbeat

One of the best and inspiring poetry zines I’ve read. J. Dennie has a great ability to notice the mundane and create a scene of drama and intrigue. My favourite poem in the collection is “Amsterdam Night Number One.” The tempo is fast and playful yet Dennie still manages to capture the true nature of the area: “you gotta love that lacy lucy/that little sexy bitch flinching in the window/she got her style from her mother/who scorned her virginity the moment she was born.” Some of the other subjects Dennie plays with are “Million Marijuana March in May,” Mississippi Hillbilly Incident,” “Youne Street Nonsense,” and others. I highly recommend this zine. (Adam Vaughn)
