Square Triangles: The Zine for Gay Nerds

This is the first issue of Square triangles, and its creator does admit he is short on material. He dedicates a large portion of his zine to a plea for submissions of all kinds. Despite being short on material, writing and overall construction of the zine is interesting. There’s a little stick man cartoon character that appears on every page and explains to us what’s going on. It’s packed with magazine and newspaper cutouts and little pictures of things with French captions. The feature piece is all about whether there is a sexual undercurrent to the Transformers. The answer: “this is a zine for geeks and the answer is OF COURSE there’s sexual undercurrent to the Transformers and this undercurrent is really, really faggy.” Transformers were my favorite cartoon when I was a kid and I’ll admit that at first I was a little skeptical of this claim. After all, I didn’t want my childhood memories of Saturday morning cartoons to be tainted with images of giant robots going at it. After reading the article, however, I must admit that he has a strong argument and that, yes, the Transformers were indeed gay- Read it, it makes a lot of sense. Overall, I feel that with a little more material and organization, Square Triangles has great potential and will surely improve with upcoming issues. (Audrey Gagnon)
