Spike

Spike is worth reading just for its articles on unknown (at least to me) visual artists like Michael Everett Glover and Michelle Clarkson. The photos of the art are impressive, although I think the reader might have been better served by actual articles providing more background than by a straight question and answer format. There’s also poetry. I especially liked Roger Bell’s Doug Meets Gator Boy. I’m puzzled, though, as to why Spike includes lengthy pieces on Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan and on non-recent films like Crumb and 12 Monkeys. These pieces offer no new insights, and surely there’s new musicians and films worth focussing on. (KR)
