We had goldfish as kids so we never had to deal with lost animal trauma, but anyone walking down a residential street can find evidence to the universality of pets gone astray. This collection brings together posters from around the world (Finland, Japan, Buenos Aires) crying out in anguish (“children crying” one notes) about lost cats and dogs. And snails. And a street duck. And a found raccoon, a stolen dog and a missing sandwich. From a scrawled missive and hand-drawn approximation of the animal concerned to photographic portraits and explicit instructions (five forms of I.D. required in L.A.), these posters capture a global community of the unfortunate. “Unless you have lost a pet, you cannot understand our sense of loss, grief and fear” proclaims one. I don’t understand but I sympathize. (TD)
