Root 3 is a post-travelogue through Canada and the United States. Original photos are interspersed with collage, retro images and text. The images are a lush colourful complement to the text. The author shares quiet moments and conversation snippets along the road. There are glimpses of nomads and intentional communities. Welcoming people abound at national parks, truck stops, cooperatives and homes of friends. At one point, Evans adopts a stray cat in the desert and it appears throughout the rest of the trip (sometimes on a leash). Wanderlust and travel are energy draining activities, which Evans readily acknowledges. Despite this, Evans reflects on the qualities and strengths of the places she visits and how she will incorporate them into her home base, Halifax. I read this zine in my two favorite places: Toronto and Berkeley. This is a beautiful publication worth rereading and sharing with friends. Although I did not get the travel itch reading Root 3, you may be inspired to pack up and go. (Grace Ma)
