Rendering the Essence of Doldrums

This zine was lying on the floor of my bedroom and my friend picked it up and said she recognized the guy on the cover and I said I thought I did too and then I looked inside and really thought I knew the angelic girl with flowers in her hair whose picture is inside. I was pretty sure it was my friend Sarah so I emailed her and described it and she said it was from her high school prom and she had sent it to Brent at his request for this zine of different portrait photos and the knitted portraits he makes based on the photos. And then Sarah reminded me that I lived for a month with Brent in Peterborough. We both had rooms in the same house one May but he didn’t talk much because he and his girlfriend were studying sign language and practiced a lot and I was off doing my own thing. And then it turns out that Brent asked specifically for me to review this zine which I really enjoyed not only because I’m tied to it biographically, not only because it’s all colourful pictures and no text (which I loved because too many zines have too much writing and no writing is wonderfully peaceful and pleasant), not only because I got to see Sarah’s pretty face again, but because it’s pretty cool what you can do with two sticks and a ball of yarn.
