Red Alert

Red Alert

If you are looking for an active, practical, do it yourself grrrl-power zine, look no further than the blood sisters who have, at long last, given us the second issue of their excellent Red Alert. Like the first issue, this zine mainly focuses on the need for women to develop alternatives to corporate produced menstrual products that can have serious health risks attached. Thus, notes on the Keeper, reusable menstrual cup, and step by step instructions on making your own washable pads. There are also testimonials on how to induce a herbal abortion (very early on in the first term) and on one woman’s difficulty facing the cold process of the clinic abortion. Poems, comics, and collages lighten the atmosphere and help Red Alert put a fun, friendly face on what is otherwise a serious, informed attempt to illuminate thinking on the way women are often duped into mistreating their bodies. (By the way, the excellent first issue is now available in a French edition, and they are working on translating the second.) (HN)
