Punk Is Like a Box of Candy

Siue chronicles her emergence as a punk, moving from her isolated childhood in Windsor where she mooned for “punk rocker” Billy Idol to her days discovering punk and coming out of her shell as a university student in Toronto. But Siue discovers later on that punk isn’t all its cracked up to be, and utilizes her sharp succinct writing style to demolish any conception we might have that she is romanticizing the mohawk. “I got my first tattoo at 25 and my first piercing at 27. I’ve been waiting 10 years. It was finally the right time. I’m still fucking straight edge. Sometimes I don’t know why I bother.” Siue hasn’t given up on punk, and the very fact that she cared enough to put out this zine proves that. She ends with a call to other maturing punk rockers who are interested in a vital scene – not ’77 punk and beer – to get in touch. (Hal Niedzviecki)
