The ole war-horse of the Canuck peacenik movement, Peace Magazine seems to be floundering a bit in this unfortunate era of, um, peace. Tolstoy is their cover story. Gee, only a century out of date. But there are always some interesting elements here, including in this issue articles on Chirac’s nuclear testing, the UN Security Council and, especially, “Creating Common Interests in the Middle East,” by Meir Amor, which is one of the few sensible ideas for conflict resolution I’ve ever heard. Down side: “Hold the Government Accountable for Media Violence” (how ’bout holding the media accountable for government violence?) and “Germans Grapple With Racist Politics”, which would have been okay, if uninspired, except that it ends thusly: “Germany is a multicultural society and it is high time that it started behaving like one.” Memo to Caitlin McVean: lecturing whole countries is poor manners, especially when your own country has some growing up to do too.
