Our Voice: The Spare Change Magazine

Well, this is about as grassroots as it gets: the 16-page newsprint paper by, for and about the homeless. By and large, the paper is filled with testimonials-which makes sense. While we talk about “the homeless” collectively, that’s really just a method of lumping them all in together, and not having to deal with each individual homeless person’s plight. This magazine attempts to personalize what our society (collectively, I might add) treats as human garbage. If life made sense, magazines such as this would become a focal point for marginalized individuals from all aspects of society to push their agenda forward. As it is, you walk past the people selling this magazine just like all the other “homeless people” you see. (SA)
