Notebook Comics
This is one of the best new zines I’ve come across in a little while. Kyla is one of those people you see on buses or subways with a notebook clutched firmly in one hand and who will often, in a moment of inspiration, start scribbling down something, anything. Well, in her first issue of an appropriately titled zine, Kyla culls some of the best parts of her notebooks to let us get a small peek into her life, and it makes for some fun reading. Her stories, whether it be about the hippie on the bus to Seattle, or Jesus The Mysterious Art Boy, are immediately engaging, witty and enhanced by the scrappy, often sarcastic, illustrations. Even the lists of stuff she did on her day off or purchased on a trip to Portland are great. A fine debut – I can hardly wait for the next issue. Highly recommended. (KJ)
