New Socialist

New Socialist

These are the activists who don’t have a sense of humour – but don’t worry, it’s entirely a good thing. Like their friends on the west coast, People’s Voice [see review], New Socialist also documents various struggles and activist events across Canada, as well as internationally, with a socialist slant. Intelligent and scholastic articles grace the pages of New Socialist making it sometimes a more difficult than it has to be (is it really necessary to call Canada ‘the Canadian state’ at every opportunity?). Among the plethora of articles, there is a nice article on Race, Gender and Class in the mobilization against neo-liberalism (their word, not mine); a very informative piece of Bill C63 and how to fight it; a summary of the Quebec nurses strike, and a review of the South Park movie which completely misses the point (see first sentence). For anyone well versed in the language of the revolution, and serious about activism, this is a must have, but this will scare away and possibly alienate anyone coming to learn about the struggle and seeing where they fit in.
