Mumbles

I’ve got grumbles with Mumbles. While there certainly is potential with this stylish little litzine, the old literary adage still holds true: the hardest person to edit is yourself. Mumbles mostly contains fiction by Editor Neil Burnby. Unfortunately, it is the couple pieces that are not by Neil that are readable. The opening short story “Born in the Middle” is weak on plot and characterization and is totally predictable. The only (sort of) compelling work in this collection is Shawna Forester’s “She Will Have Her Way” – a good story that needs some desperate help with language. The best thing I read in Mumbles is the bio page, which reminded me that these people are trying. But really, please try harder and be more selective. (Jon Pressick)
