Collage-ridden, 8 1/2″ x 11″, stapled Matilda, subtitled “and she’s having a great time driving them crazy”, has to be the cutest grrrl zine I’ve seen in a long time. It has the same name as its creator, and it’s a real cut ‘n’ paste job with quotes by Sleater Kinney, Cibo Matto and Lucinda Williams. It’s empowering, can’t think of any other way to describe it. There are stories about Creator Matilda’s relationship troubles, why she wears her bike helmet (geeky=cool), and the day-by-day intimate travails of learning to ride a skateboard. Oooh… And what’s this? Tucked inside the Big Matilda is little ’tilda, this girl’s Ladyfest travel diary. Ladyfest is this big indie culture fest organized by riot grrls that took place in Olympia Washington this summer. It’s well worth a buck to get oodles of Matilda. Check out her life. (EPW)
