Letters from the Freakin’ Edge

I used to collect records of crank phone calls back in the day. These were always good for a couple laughs. It seems some zines have translated the game to their medium, giving us the “crank letter”. John Doh’s self-aggrandizing intro to this collection of his correspondence is offset by his reprinting of bad reviews of previous issues. Most compare him unfavorably to an American practitioner of such mischief and slag him for his reliance on toilet humour. He’s matured a bit since then. These letters tread closer to the possible, garnering bureaucratic responses which allow Doh to follow through with antagonistic rebuttals. That is sorta fun but only the written request to join the “Green Berries” from a Soldier of Fortune subscribing, survival knife wielding hot head (who boasts of completing 468 “extreme squats” per day) actually managed to make me laugh.
