King Can

You know straight off from the grizzly trailer park scene on the cover that this one’ll leave a taste in your mouth when you’re done. Maybe something akin to the baby that’s being barbecued, I dunno. But it sure is filling. I can hardly get into the potential layers of meaning to be interpreted from Dominique’s self-described “decadent road movie”, “Kai”, but it sure is fun to let your eyes wander all over it. Caro’s “Legend of Cyprine,” about a girl born from a maple syrup tapper fucking one of his trees, reads like a great modern fairy-tale. It was a pleasure to read, full of exquisitely rendered romance, depravity and drama (her first lover dies from high blood sugar, from all the maple syrup he’d eat anytime he’d eat her out.) Caro and Dominique’s styles complement each other perfectly here; one searches for true love, the other revels in its baser form. They both do it with a solid sense of humor that ultimately highlights the fun to be had from either one, and in equally original drawing styles that make this the all-around best comic I’ve seen in awhile.
