In Thomsett-land, we move from the problems of scruffy art school hipsters to the sallow eyed, Victorian-style people populating Pretend City. To fully appreciate this singular vision, you have to forget about who you are, what you want, what you need. Close yourself down and you’ll get a vague sense of Thomsett herself, restless wanderer past a world where ideas just aren’t enough. When you write Jane, make sure you send her an extra $4 to acquire the wonderfully weird colouring and activity book Nine Famous Alcoholic Artists. Play the word find (tipsy, wino, worry, and genius) and read about famous creator boozers like Kerouac, De Kooning and Jane Bowles. (HN)
