…If There Are Celestial Beings

B. Andrew Proctor s Celestial Beings didn’t really grab me. This wasn’t because there was anything wrong with the writing. On the contrary, the writing was very clear and straight forward. I think that the main problem for me was that the poems and interconnecting stories just didn t engage my personal interest. I mean, I can appreciate where he s coming from. He s got this magical animal called Hyena who is all-knowing and wise. And obviously, he is going for a kind of Ted- Hughes-Crowlike-feel. But for all those good intentions, Hyena just doesn t stack up. Now I don t want to be unfair to Mr. Proctor. It s obvious that a lot of time and effort went into the production of Celestial Beings. So I ll say this: if you re into mystical animals spouting a sort of New Age wisdom then give this thing a try. If, on the other hand, you might want to pass on this and pick up a copy of the original Crow at some second-hand book store. (DP)
