I am Job

The theme of this collection of short articles is ‘Odd Jobs’. It’s an intrinsically interesting one, and lots of people have tackled it to good effect, so the little blurb on the title page that says “The subject matter is made interesting through the descriptive writing of the up and coming writers featured herein” raised my hackles a bit. Maybe that’s why I didn’t like this collection so much. These are student showpieces, and of course some of them are more interesting than others; but there’s a sameness to the tone that’s almost spooky, like all the magazine writers are being controlled by one massive central magazine-writer mind. But I guess that just shows that they’ve assimilated to their craft, and I expect that they’ll all go on to publish frequently and happily. Anyway, if you like reading about other peoples’ jobs (and who doesn’t?) it’s worth a peek. (Wendy Banks)
