House of the Midnight Supper

Truth is, Halifax’s Rebecca can’t really draw all that well (I mean, for a comic artist — she draws a lot better than I do!), but that only adds to the charm of these books. I should say, first off, that there are three of them, in addition to Supper, there is also Gene Vincent ($2) and Fantastic & Romantic Tales: The Dress ($3). Each one features Rebecca’s simple, somewhat infantile drawings, and tells a tale in a different way. The Dress is a silent story about, hey, a dress, but also love and an astronaut. Gene Vincent is a reflection on Gene Vincent, primarily from a nostalgic point of view. Supper, the biggest work, tells us about Rebecca’s grandparents and their culinary practices out in rural BC. All these books are fun to read, and Rebecca makes up for her graphic deficiencies with the obvious enjoyment she is getting from telling us these tales. (Hal Niedzviecki)
