Ground Control

Paul of Radio Slack is back with his new zine and another series of short pithy essays on the way consumer culture keeps us down. The good: The clean lay-out and fifties clip art work beautifully together and heighten the irony Paul is famous for. The bad: No more of Paul’s wit- laden collages. The good: Fast moving short essays that maintain their focus and don’t succumb to the temptation of unnecessary statistics and terminology. The bad: With the exception of Living Logo about how actress Betty Furness became know as ‘The Lady From Westinghouse’ and Dead Televisions Can’t Rape, Paul’s words are a bit on the orthodox side; thinking people already know Andrew Lloyd Weber sucks and that the marketing of individuality is an oxymoronic endeavor. Recommendations: The obscure, the bizarre, the hilarious are Paul’s strengths. No one picks up on an incredulous piece of history the way Paul does. Don’t give us platitudes, give us the substance of wackiness the way you perceive it. Keep working the fifties thing, don’t give up on your dream of marrying Scooby-Doo Mystery show’s indie rock godess Velma Dinkley, and expand the bargain basement culture feature. The truth: Paul’s runaway critique of the capitalist accident provides ground control for the circling masses.
