Greenzine

The title of this zine misled me. I thought I was in for an environmental number. Instead I read all about cristy c.road’s history and politics and how these intersect her life. #14 is a flashback to 1991 and all the transitions she and her group of friends were facing and embracing. She covers race, culture, music, sexual orientation, feminism, socialism, drugs, booze, punk life, gender, family, sexual assault and still more facets of her experience. I did enjoy her words, though at times I had to struggle to get more than just a gist of her ideas. It was kind of like reading Shakespeare in high school; I got the general message, and occasionally a glimpse of the full picture, but somehow the arrangement of her words barred me from getting more than that. The thing that really takes my breath away about this zine are her drawings. They are drop dead gorgeous. Like photographs, but in black ink. The people and moments she captures are breathtaking. It would be an honour to see your likeness through her eyes, or a scene you shared. Cristy c.road sounds like one kick-ass friend and activist to have on your team. She’s righteous, impulsive, thoughtful, intelligent, a talented artist, and even some fun. (heze douglas)
