Granma International

As long as I treat the content with suspicion, I enjoy Granma—the official publication of the Cuban government. This particular issue had a good piece comparing the treatment of those protesting U.S. military testing on the Puerto Rico island of Vieques and those who kidnapped Elian Gonzalez. I was pleasantly surprised with the piece on jazz singer Nikki Yeoh. While not at all subtle in its defence of Cuba, an approach it shares with the National Post’s defence of capitalism, it does provide a glimpse of a society we too often only see through the eyes of mainstream western media.
