Girlscan

Recently I’ve been doing some research on women who are producing and performing in music. I find it odd that many women think we have generally overcome inequality in the workplace. Even if I were to assume that equal opportunity is a fact, I would still have to say that women are socialized to exercise their options in limited areas. For instance, girls generally aren’t encouraged to start rock bands, or tinker around with electrical equipment. I have met many talented women who doubt their abilities, and often express fear over breaking the ‘equipment’, ie. computer, guitar, turntable, etc.) I have heard this line many times. I guess I should end my rant by actually talking about Girlscan Magazine. I think Girlscan shows great promise in providing young women with a positive reflection of themselves. Young girls can send accounts of their achievements and their own work into the magazine for a chance to appear in print. I know it’s important for girls to hear about what their peers are doing. Even now, when I find out about a women doing something which you don’t usually see, I am inspired. I often think, well there’s another possibility. One thing that could make Girlscan more appealing to its target audience is a more updated look. It kinda looks like a girl scout quarterly newsletter or something. If a magazine looks ‘cool’ then you’re going to be able to reach a larger audience. Good Luck! (MI)
