I first received femme at Canzine. I was stoked, thinking “femme” was being used in the traditional queer sense, but actually it describes women as depicted in comics. Once I recovered from the lack of queer content I got bummed out by the feminist academic slant of the interviews. However, when I re-read it I got a very different take. This zine gives an incredible history of my childhood icon Wonder Woman. Mandy presents us with an artistic and personal history of WW’s creator Marston. I had no idea! He certainly doesn’t sound like your average man of the 1940s: the lucky dog lived with two women and all his children, and the two women remained together after he died– hmmm. There is a plethora of great old strips to feast your eyes on before moving into interviews with the wonderful Trina Robbins, and the exceptional Julie Doucet. Mandy sure knows how to snare some of the hottest cartoon creating ladies of our time! And the interviews don’t stop there. If you’re interested in becoming an expert on Wonder Woman or in women’s contributions and depictions in this fabled form, this is a great zine to pick up. (heze d)
