Starting off with an arsenic-tinged salvo entitled “Sniveling Vermin,” the second edition of Electric Eye is an exercise in wild and woolly social commentary, and scribbling and venting. Adventurous superdudes BJ Cox and Max Groadie have scribed a series of individually titled comics that start off full of funnies and worms but typically end up with primary characters getting their skulls bashed. Take “Severd Hed”, for example-here’s the Cole’s Notes version: man returns meatloaf at a restaurant, gets the shit kicked out of him, worm scarfs down meatloaf, cleaver-toting chef emerges from kitchen, chef serves Salisbury turkey on a bed of rice, garnished with pineapple maraschino and luscious bacon gravy. It’s enough to make a man’s mouth water! Of course, there’s more. “I Know What’s Mine”, “Demon Giraffe Boy” and “Zut Alors” are some of your titles plus a vexing news piece called “Vince Neil is a Fucking Asshole”. Production-wise, Electric Eye is 100% hand-drawn, which is pretty damn organic for 2005. So yeah, there’s a lot of bile being spilled with Electric Eye but it’s all pretty laughable. (Cameron Gordon)
