Eggbeater

This has a horrid cover and, with features like “songs in my head”, would be completely forgettable were it not for the force of Brett’s turgid prose. “Basquait lived as an artist, but went down like a rock-star,” trumpets our man on the demise of New York painter Jean-Michel. “Why the hell do they sell used underwear? Why the hell do they sell other people’s trophies?” Brett wants to know in the section “Juss’ Wonderin”. Beyond Brett’s bluster is an insatiable curiosity and a cogent intelligence: “The main force behind the beater was the punishing desire to create something with a life of its own,” he insists, redeeming Eggbeater and offering up an example of the way a bad zine can be good.
