Cult Hero

Cult Hero

“My sister once told me that zinesters were just a bunch of losers trying to find the cheapest way to complain to the public. I believed this comment to be true but of course, it did not qualify me. However, many readers tend to think otherwise,” begins Angela. Then she insults Broken Pencil reviewers, calling us “stupid people who use big words.” OK whatever. It’s pretty hard to read the over-photocopied sans serif font, but I have an immediate, intense affinity for Cult Hero – its doll-like female martyr figures; its heart-wrenching intimacy; its eerieness. CH reminds me of high school, in all its glorious pain and anonymity. What I can glimpse of Angela’s personality reminds me of a friend from Winnipeg. That’s it. Cult Hero is so fascinating because it blends aloofness with extreme subjectivity, and spits the reader out at the end of the ride with a distinct “fuck you!” stamped on their forehead. Definitely worth getting your hands on. (EPW)
