Very cool zine. Some very interesting insights in the opening editorial: “There’s nothing fresh about advancing technology. What about regressing technology? That’s new.” A good variety of stuff, like a couple pages of “deep thought”-like lines, some lo-fi comics, and some stories that make for a varied read. Sentiments betraying a concern for our dire social situation pop up here and there, refreshingly free of the kind of high-horse tone found in activist zines and their ilk. However, some of the observations could stand to be less cynical. Example: “Money has run the world for so long now, there really is no turning back unless everybody decides to turn together, which will never happen.” Well, it’s actually going to happen, and pretty soon, too: the shutdown of the global economy during the first week of 2000 as a result of that bug. This is an opportunity misled activist types should not only be dreaming of but planning for – just go change our systems for the better before we plug them back in. But I digress, kind of. There’s a fair amount of stuff in here which achieves the difficult task of being thought-provoking and entertaining. A good example is a great piece by George Carlin (probably lifted off the Net) who rants about the annoying megalomania of environmentalism. Good bathroom reading. (LR)
