Charlie

Charlie looks like a comic book and the ensuing stories and poems read like lurid thought bubbles of bitter Bukowski. That’s not a criticism, just an observation of Tony Nesca’s capacity to draw in, illustrate, entrance and then puke all over the page. Soulless, and desperate, a character named Tony populates a seedy world of strip bars, 50 cents drafts and the “grossinator”. This is the kind of rapid fire writing that offers an irrevocable challenge to visions of a Canada of light and fields and prosperity. Here lines are crossed and dreams are dreamed in the twilight of urban existentialism. Recommended. (HN)
