The essay on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers name drops braniac high theorists like Michel Foucault (Power/Knowledge), Luce Irigaray (Speculum of the Other Woman) and Louis Althusser (Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses), but does it address the lexical ramifications of the absent “g”? Lacking even an apostrophe to mark its erasure, the “g” (with an “X” through it), results in the neologism, “morphin”. I don’t know if this is addressed because I was too tired to read the essay. I was also too tired to read, “Franklin: Ideal Children’s Literary Idol or Flavourless Turtle of Privilege.” The summary sez the critic is concerned with questioning “the socializing and didactic value of the Franklin books, as well as the uniqueness and substance of Franklin himself.” Sounds scintillating, but I’d rather read the cartoon turtle’s actual adventures than some egghead analysis of the repressed dialectics of reptile_amphibian hierarchies in pre_school gender paradigms. Like most zines, this journo is for particular tastes. Not mine. (TD)
