Burn

Number two of this swank looking cowboy comic book tells us a couple of tall tales, the most notable being an introduction to the rabid murdering ways of Kid .45 and the short but haunting Henry’s Lot. But the main story that was set up last issue, the tale of the young kids in a band, has yet to really get started. With his gaunt, expressive cast of characters and a great ear for dialogue, Burn should maybe be farther along than it is. The thing is, Tim is great at creating scenarios, setting up the shadowy terrain, giving the characters history and personality, but he struggles with plot. He’s at his best when he stops trying to make things happen; Henry’s Lot, the tale of a gambling man whose afraid of his wife’s newly acquired bust of Jesus, is the least conventional story and the most successful work in Burn. This could be a great comic, but right know it’s only a good one. (HN)
