In Balancing Equations, the author muses about the pros and cons of falling in love, and getting one’s heart broken. Is the pain of heartbreak more important-of higher value-than the love affair itself? Is falling in love even worth the effort, without a memorable break-up? The compelling characters ring true, and the story seems all the more believable because of its simplicity. The book takes us from sex to love, and from love to sex, in a few easy pages, and even though Sullivan assures us that Balancing Equations is a work of fiction, the end drawing, by Matt McCracken, illustrates a reality that many of us have to face.
