Atopia

Everybody talks about the Net as a functioning anarchy, but nobody does anything about it. Maybe it’s more accurate to say that every third Net user strikes an anarchist pose, but most of them would be hard-pressed to name any three anarchist thinkers. Well, if you want to bone up a bit on your anti-authoritarianism, cruise by Atopia. The name is apparently a splice between “anarchy” and “Utopia”, the site’s slogan is “Imagining tomorrow today” and they sometimes seem a little blase about the use of violence, but if you can handle that triple-header there’s actually some depth of material here. You’ve got your essays on creative debt avoidance. You’ve got your rants against the Fraser Institute. You’ve got your poems about the black-market trade in human organs. You’ve even got scrolling JavaScript aphorisms at the bottom of the screen (gah). Of particular interest is the outstanding compendium to links to other sites on anarchy and temporary autonomous zones, every social movement from ecology to peace to feminism to labour, as well as Canadian law, government and politics.
