Once I let go of my preconceived notions, the initial disappointment slipped away as I realized the potential of what I held in front of me. Couture is a skilled writer. Her words are cleverly crafted, though I did I think certain segments could be improved by grounding them so the reader’s mind doesn’t float about disjointedly. Lyrically I was most moved by this: “named after a steel mill, algoma was born with curved ribs of rusting rebar, a white-hot coke oven for a mouth and a heart powered by twin Pielstick V-10 cylinder 5,350 horsepower diesel engines.” Another aspect of this small piece of press that warmed me was the commissioned artwork by Fiona Smyth on the cover.
