55 Words

Birds do more than fill unperverted binocular lenses. They inspire poets and comic artists like Rosemary Mosco, a bit of both who enjoys short vignettes of nostalgic dialogue without beginning or ends. 55 Words is a zine of poems that are-you guessed it-55 words long. It’s a creative investigation in uncreative restrictions (Amy C. Lam makes poems restricted by the sequence of the alphabet). This creative paradox is not unlike making zines at your office day job, making fun within the restrictions of 9-5. Mosco’s short pieces allow fairytales to come to mind, perfectly fit Tetris blocks and the kindergarten memories of Becky’s story zines from Sweetie Pie Press. Mosco respects her pecking muses, by promoting awareness of the Toronto Wildlife Centre, and since the recent emergence of the Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) that encourages skyscrapers to turn the lights off at night so migrating birds don’t fly into suicide, Mosco adds a personal touch to a problem previously unsung.
