Zine Review: The Grimoire: Doomed Love/Lovers Lost in the Fire

The Grimoire: Doomed Love/Lovers Lost in the Fire

This zine is the second edition of The Grimoire, published by Women Who Witch in February of this year. The collective of contributors seeks to “amplify the voices of female-identifying and gender-queer writers and artists”. The zine itself is black and white with a mish-mash of pieces that include short stories and essays, images and comics, poetry, and confessionals of fiction and non-fiction alike. The zine gives off a general distrust of lovers, which we all can relate to. Learn how to cast a safe hex, walk through a triumphant days long tinder date, read your boyfriend’s ransom note and sit with a couple of imaginative short stories. The collection can feel choppy and disjointed and yet manages to feel unifying in its anger and contempt for those who have done us wrong. It gives a nod to the good lover while also calling you back to those post-breakup feelings of ripping apart crappy connections. Women Who Witch are looking for submissions for their one-year anniversary issue of The Grimoire, due in October. The next issue is themed around sex and, in keeping with their witchy ways, they suggest you add works of blood and fire. (CJ Blennerhassett)
