This Weekend! The Toronto Animation Arts Festival International

Trailer for Cheatin’ from Bill Plympton

Hopefully you all know by know that it’s SUMMER (Foreal! Look outside! Or even go outside!)— and with the season comes a slew of amazing indie arts events. We at Broken Pencil are dedicated to keeping you up to date with every week’s innovative and glamorous happenings with our weekly Indie Events listings every Monday, but you can also look forward to getting more details about some of the things we’re most excited about.

Which brings us to this weekend’s amazing Toronto Animation Arts Festival International (TAAFI). There’s nothing quite like TAAFI, a three day festival which brings together the many sides of animation around the world for the public to enjoy. This year’s festival runs from this Friday, June 13, until Monday, June 16 at Toronto’s Waterfront (Corus Quay & George Brown – Waterfront Campus) and features over 100 shorts and many feature films as well.

In particular, Broken Pencil is super stoked to be co-presenting the screening of legendary Bill Plympton’s feature animation Cheatin’, this Saturday, June 14, at 6:45pm at George Brown’s Waterfront Campus.

It’s about, you guessed it, jealous lovers trying to piece together the shambles of a once storybook romance. If you don’t know Plympton’s work, check out his website. His painstaking drawings and unique style are truly remarkable, the perfect vessel for his playful and profound storytelling. Watch the preview of Cheatin’ above for a little taste.

And there are tons of other things to check out at TAAFI! More after the jump.

They range from family-friendly (Look kids, shorts!) to experimental (Norman McLaren Retrospective anyone?) to nostalgic (you guessed it—Saturday morning cartooons).

There are also almost three dozen talks to choose from, including an event with the creators of Phineas & Ferb and Rocko’s Modern Life, a focus on Women in Animation , local stop-motion creators and tons more. Many of these are part of the 26th Society for Animation Studies Conference through Sheridan College.

For comics, illustration, animation types, TAAFI is the kind of thing you look forward to all year. See you there!
