Lonely and Loving It: Some Alternative Valentine’s Day Events

Every year Valentine’s Day rolls around and a collective groan can be heard from a majority of the population. We’re subjected to hand-holding and puppy dog eyes and claims of undying love and affection — it’s tragic. So I give to you five cross-Canada ANTI-Valentines plans that will dig you out of that hole of V-Day hatred and you’ll have a mighty fine time while you’re at it.

# 5 – Friday February 8, Zombie Gras, The Artery, 9535 Jasper Ave., Edmonton, Alberta.

Do you find the undead to be a hopeless catalyst for romance? Then Zombie Gras was made for you. They have bands, games and prizes and of course, you should come dressed as your favourite undead person. The event sponsors are also looking to put together a Zombie Love Story Musical. Interested Edmontonians should check out their Facebook page.

#4 – Wednesday February 13, REJECTED! Tales of Romance Gone Wrong, Comedy Bar, 945 Bloor St. W., Toronto, Ontario.

Everyone – I assume – has felt rejection once or twice in their lives. It isn’t fun, but it can be funny. REJECTION at the Comedy Bar is a standup story telling and variety show aimed at the heart strings – with the intent of plucking them out one by one with laughter. For details check out the Facebook page.

#3 – Blue Valentine Special Showing – The Ridge Theatre, 3113 Arbutus Street., Vancouver, BC (see site for showtimes)

This is in no way a happy movie – it’s really  for those who love to see relationships fail. If you want to see two people have their hearts torn asunder and leave the theatre smiling through your tears, go watch Blue Valentine at the soon-to-be-demolished Ridge.

#2 – Saturday February 9, Toronto Queer Valentine Slow Dance, Dovercourt House, 805 Dovercourt Rd., Toronto, Ontario.

Here is the one plug I will give to love this Valentines day. Sherwin Tija has organized an event to get every lonely wallflower onto the dance floor and share intimate moments with total strangers, in the best way possible. It’s a night of inclusion and acceptance, where you swoon to tunes and dance the night away. For full details check out the Facebook page.

#1 – DIY Sex Toys, 1500 de Maisonneuve O., suite 204, Montreal, Quebec

This is it. Nothing should say Valentine’s Day more than the opportunity to craft wrist restraints out of old bike tubes. With the help of QPIRG Concordia, make yourself a marital aid or a strap-on harness. This gathering promotes safe sex and fun sex, with glitter galore. If you’re lucky enough to be in Montreal on the 14th and you’re looking for something to do from 6:00 to 9:30 check out DIY SEX TOYS!

So that’s the list! We hope your slog towards V-Day is a little more bearable…

    1. Heya superb website! Does running a blog such as this require a lot of work?

I have very little expertise in programming but I had been hoping to start my own blog soon. Anyhow, if you have any ideas or tips for new blog owners please share.
I know this is off subject however I just had to ask.
      Kudos!

  2. My spouse and I absolutely love your blog and find the majority of your post’s to
