If Erin were a book, she would be an open book, a hardcover with a fancy dust jacket. As a book, Erin hopes that her spine would be broken in several areas to denote touch but she is thankful to not have a fractured spine in real life. Erin would love to be an epic historical novel or a British mystery but she is probably best classified as post-modern Canadiana.

I Was a Can.Lit Sex Slave

by Emily Schultz

I don’t like talking about my time spent as a sex slave for Canadian literature. But it does still come up at parties. Believe me, it does. Where did it all go wrong? How did I wind up in fashion photographer Chris Nicholls’ Carlaw Street studio in Toronto, wearing lipstick and a strappy dress, my shoulders bared to the world, all in the name of literature? How did I go from being the director of my university Womyn’s Centre to the hetero-nightmare that I am today?

I remember so little from before that fateful day. The day that the infamous Gutter Press publisher on the run, Sam Hiyate, asked me to pose for what would be a defining (though short-lived) moment in Canadian literature. Hiyate had an idea, a plan to topple the literary establishment and shock the press. It was just a little joke, really. As we gathered , it all seemed so innocent: 14 women writers—smiling, chatting, and reapplying makeup for the cover shoot. Yes, I am speaking about the now-notorious original b+a“Li... read more

Burlesque Not Dead: a roundup of resurrections

the little black book for girlz

I love the little black book for girlz. It's an informative, empowering and honest collection. In the vein of peer education this book was created by the young women who hung out at the Youth Arcade Drop-in housed in St. Stephen's Community centre. These gals talk about their experiences with their sexuality (acts and preferences), their bodies, their gender, their misadventures and so much more. Not only do we get personal tales wrought with the awkwardness of first tampons, and oral sex blunders, but we also are regaled with info via interviews with health care providers about assault, std facts, abortion and birth control. They don't forget about relationships, trans issues or those young queers either. This is all presented like a zine like zest. Oh, and with every cutting edge creation comes controversy. Some whack job at LifeSiteNews.com dubbed its sales at Wal-Mart this way: "Wal-Mart Hits Teens with Gay Porn How-To Manual." Wow if that were true that would be really cool too! Anyway, surprise, surprise, Wal-Mart caved and pulled the book from its shelves - another reason to not shop at Wal-Mart and reject right-wing censorship. This gem will definitely fall into my daughter's hands when that puberty hurricane hits. P.S. I don't want to forget to tell you about the great resources section in the back. Just a few taps away on the keyboard are answers to any questions they didn't cover and opportunities to connect with support.
